About EU Ecolabel Pulps

Aim

The aim of this database is to support the European Commission, Competent Bodies (CB) and paper manufacturers by improving the accessibility to environmentally relevant data on pulps to be used in EU Ecolabel paper products, and thus making it easier for companies to apply for a license, for CBs to assess the applications and for the Commission to develop accurate criteria.

All the pulps included in the database are assessed by one of the EU Ecolabel Competent Bodies.

The general objective for creating the database is to support the European Commission, Competent Bodies and companies by improving the accessibility of environmentally relevant data on pulps to be used in EU Ecolabel paper products, leading to an increased uptake of EU Ecolabel paper products.

Data stored

Environmentally relevant data values included in the database are:

  1. water emissions (Chemical oxygen demand [COD], Phosphorous [P], Adsorbable organic halogens [AOX]) from the pulp production,
  2. air emissions (Sulphur [S], Nitrogen oxides [NOx] and Carbon dioxide [CO2]) from the pulp production and
  3. fuel and electricity usage in the pulp production.

Consent

Pulp producers need to agree that their data are stored in the database. No assessed pulp will be included in the database against the producer’s will. The collection and distribution of data will follow the respective legislative data protection requirement of the European Union (GDPR).

Only those assessed pulps will be listed on the public side of the database, the environmentally relevant data of which is allowed to be stored in the database. It is therefore possible that there are assessed pulps not shown on the list of assessed pulps.

Visitors, without an account, have the right to

  • see name and manufacturer of all assessed pulps

Pulp producers, with an account, will have the right to

  • see same information as visitors plus
  • see environmentally relevant data for their own pulps

Applicants for the EU Ecolabel for paper products, with an account, will have the right to

  • see same information as visitors plus
  • see environmentally relevant data for all the pulps included in the system

Gain access as applicant for the EU Ecolabel or as pulp producer
